10 Bedroom Renovation Tips to Help Get You Started

10 Bedroom Renovation Tips to Help Get You Started

Your bedroom is a personal and intimate place, so you want your new bedroom to fit your lifestyle and reflect your personality.  If you’re like many, being on trend with interior design styling may also be important to you.  Before you start ripping out your furniture and knocking out the walls, here’s some things to keep in mind to ensure you’re getting the bedroom renovation result you’re hoping for.

1. Identify what’s important to you in a bedroom

When it comes to renovating a bedroom, there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all. You may want a serene retreat to relax in at the end of the day while others may prefer a vibrant place to get ready for a night out so considering what you want the space to do for you is the key starting point. It’s also helpful to think about the activities you normally do in the space. If you’re a reader, for instance, you may want to integrate a bookcase and reading light next to your bed as part of your bedroom design. If storage and displaying the things that are special to you is important, shelving may be a key feature.

2. Plan your bedroom renovation project

Once you’ve worked out what you want from the renovation, it’s time to plan.  Depending on your budget and the extent of the renovation, you may want to bring in a specialised building designer, like Perfect Square Design, who can help sketch your vision and advise you on the best design choices moving forward, including any necessary approvals or other regulatory considerations, and help you find the right builder should you need one.Collecting photos of what you like and creating a mood board can also be a helpful part of the planning process as it allows you to gain clarity about what you’re after and is a fantastic tool to save time when speaking with your building designer so they can instantly see the style and features you’re describing.

3. Layout and furniture

When planning the layout of your bedroom do spend some time thinking about the position of doors, windows, built-in wardrobes and ensuites as they are an important part of the bedroom design steps and can have a big impact on what furniture you can fit in and how they’re positioned.  For instance, will you be able to position your bed in a direction that allows you to enjoy looking outside yet still have room to walk around it.  Is your bedroom going to give you all the natural light you need?  If not, you may need to widen your current windows or consider repositioning them altogether.

Tip:  Before widening or moving windows, check that your Council will allow it or you can get in touch with us and we can help find out for you.

4. Work out and set a renovation budget

It’s all too easy to run out of money if you don’t correctly budget your bedroom renovation, factoring in things like contractors’ fees, unexpected site costs and even approvals.

Where possible, bring in an expert building designer to help you set and stay on budget. Here at Perfect Square Design, we’ll look for ways to stretch your bedroom renovation budget further and guide you on the common costs many fail to mention so you have a realistic picture of what you’re up for BEFORE you begin.

5. Floors and lighting

The flooring and lighting you choose can make a big difference to your level of comfort, the overall look of your bedroom, and your renovation budget.

Some of the more popular flooring materials you’ll find used in bedrooms these days include

  • Carpet
  • Hardwood flooring
  • Cork flooring
  • Vinyl flooring, and
  • Laminate flooring.

The good news is, there are many budget flooring options that can often achieve the same look as more expensive ones, and if you’ve got kids, do consider ease of cleaning, durability and allergies.

When it comes to lighting, the type and level of lighting you choose can create ambience and elevate the luxe feel of the room.  Cleverly positioned lamps can also frame your bed and transform a room with just a simple flick of a switch – and a very much overlooked design hack.

Unfortunately, making flooring and lighting choices can be difficult so you may find turning to someone like a building designer can take away a lot of the stress and help you achieve a designer look.

6. Functionality

When renovating your bedroom, making sure functionality is at the forefront of all design decisions is paramount.  If your room doesn’t work for you, especially if you’re planning to stay in your home for a long time, it can become one of life’s irritations, and not conducive to rest, meditation and a good night’s sleep.

7. Modern creature comforts

Could your bedroom renovation be an opportunity to harness the power of technology to make your life easier?  Home technology has come a long way and you can do everything from turning on your TV, modulating the level of light and sound in a space or opening and closing your blinds only with voice control.  Imagine the possibilities, especially on a lazy Sunday morning.

An expert building designer can incorporate these technological elements so you have a smart bedroom renovation design.

8. Add colour and textures

Carefully thought-out colour and texture gives your room personality and style and, best of all, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Wall colour plays a massive role in changing your bedroom’s appearance. Go for something that you love. If you want to play it safe, timeless whites and classic neutrals always look elegant and by just adding a spray of colour through soft furnishings and art can make a room pop.

Choice of colour can also have a big impact on how you feel in the space.  For smaller spaces, sticking to lighter tones will help open up the room.  Soft pinks can add a soothing effect and yellows an uplifting feel.

Generally in larger bedrooms you can be bolder with your colour choices.  However, to keep it relaxing and calming, green-blue, most greys and blue-violet may be colours you may want to explore, and avoid high-energy colours like deep reds and bright tropical hues.

Should you be doing a simple renovation and not planning to paint, you can achieve a bedroom refresh just by

–  changing bedding and linen
–  adding a rug, and
–  bringing the room together with textured throws, wall weavings and cushions.

If you’re not confident in your colour and soft furnishing choices, interior decorators and colour consultants can be extremely helpful, or you can chat with our expert design team for more ideas to help you achieve the overall look you’re after.

9. Bedroom Sitting Area

If you have an oversized bedroom room or extra space to play with, a bedroom sitting area is an effective way of adding a functional zone for reading, hobbies or escaping from the kids. One of the often-overlooked benefits of a bedroom sitting area is that it can provide you with an alternative to your bed for activities like checking emails and charging devices.

10. Storage and de-cluttering

The piece de resistance of any bedroom renovation is a clear and well-organised space where you can unwind and sleep. Use your bedroom renovation as the ideal opportunity to get rid of all those unwanted items and upgrade your storage, such as a professionally-designed built-in or walk-in wardrobe so everything else has a place.

For a quick and inexpensive solution, a storage ottoman at the end of your bed gives you a comfy place to sit, somewhere to tuck away extra blankets and clothes, and the added benefit of injecting some décor glamour.
